Qibla Directions in Perspective: Why Every Degree Matters at Distance

The Kaaba is a 13.1-metre building in Makkah. When you are standing 10,000 kilometres away, a 1° error in your Qibla direction means your line of sight misses the Kaaba by approximately 175 kilometres at that distance. This is why the direction must be calculated with geographic precision, not approximated.

The great-circle path — the shortest distance across the Earth's curved surface — is the correct mathematical approach. A flat map will show the Qibla direction incorrectly for any location more than a few hundred kilometres from Makkah. Approximate Qibla Bearings by Region

For general orientation before consulting the specific city page:

North America (USA and Canada) From most of North America, the Qibla points northeast — approximately 45°–70° depending on how far east or west you are. From the west coast (Los Angeles, Vancouver), the bearing is closer to 20°–30° north-northeast. From the east coast (New York, Boston), it is closer to 55°–65° northeast.

Western Europe (UK, France, Germany) From Western Europe, the Qibla points southeast — approximately 110°–130°. From the UK, the bearing is roughly 119°. This surprises many European Muslims who assume the Qibla faces east.

South Africa From Johannesburg and Cape Town, the Qibla points almost due north — approximately 2°–5° from north. This is one of the most counterintuitive Qibla directions in the world for Muslims who expect to face east.

Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia) From Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, the Qibla points west-northwest — approximately 293°–295°. Not west, and certainly not east.

South Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh) From Karachi, the Qibla is approximately 270°–285° west. From Dhaka, approximately 277°. From Mumbai, approximately 280°.

Australia From Sydney and Melbourne, the Qibla points west-northwest — approximately 277°–285°.
