The Quran does not simply say to pray — it specifies that prayer is bound to time:
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا
“Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.”
The word used is mawqutan — time-bound, scheduled, fixed. Praying outside the appointed window without a valid reason is treated as a serious matter by scholars of all madhabs. The time of prayer is not incidental to the prayer — it is part of the obligation itself.
This means that knowing precisely when each prayer begins is not a convenience. It is an Islamic requirement.
Fajr begins at true astronomical dawn — when the first light appears as a white horizontal stripe along the horizon, not the reddish glow that precedes it (which is the false dawn). This is typically 60–90 minutes before sunrise, though it varies significantly by season and latitude. Fajr ends at sunrise. During Ramadan, Fajr is also the time of Imsak — the moment the fast begins — making its precise calculation especially critical.
Dhuhr enters when the sun crosses its zenith (highest point in the sky) and begins its descent. This is solar noon — not 12:00 PM on the clock, but the astronomical midpoint of the day. Solar noon can fall anywhere from 11:40 AM to 1:10 PM depending on your longitude within your time zone and the time of year. Dhuhr ends when an object's shadow equals its own length (the entry of Asr by the majority view).
Asr is the most discussed prayer time in classical Islamic law because the two major schools calculate its entry differently:
This difference can result in a 45–75 minute gap between the two Asr times, depending on season and latitude. The QuranBookk Prayer Times tool allows you to select your madhab preference so the Asr time shown is correct for your school.
Maghrib begins at the moment of astronomical sunset — when the upper edge of the sun's disc disappears below the horizon. According to the majority of scholars, it should be prayed promptly after sunset without delay. Maghrib ends at the disappearance of the red twilight (the entry of Isha).
Isha begins when the red twilight disappears from the western sky — typically 60–90 minutes after Maghrib. Isha ends at solar midnight (halfway between Maghrib and Fajr) according to most scholars, though some permit it until true Fajr as a necessity.
If you have ever compared two prayer time apps and found different times for the same location, you have encountered the calculation method difference. The primary variation is in how Fajr and Isha are defined — each uses an angle below the horizon that differs by organization:
| Organization | Fajr Angle | Isha Angle | Primary Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muslim World League (MWL) | 18° | 17° | Europe, Far East, Americas |
| Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) | 15° |
A 3° difference in the Fajr angle can shift the Fajr time by 15–20 minutes — which is significant for someone managing Suhoor timing during Ramadan.
Muslims in northern latitudes — Scotland, Scandinavia, Canada above 50°N, Alaska — face a unique challenge. During summer months, the sun barely sets or does not set at all. In some Scandinavian cities, the sky never becomes fully dark between June and August, meaning the standard definition of Isha (red twilight disappearing) is technically never met.
Scholars have issued fatwas for these regions recommending one of two approaches:
The QuranBookk Prayer Times tool applies appropriate high-latitude adjustments automatically based on your location.
The Prophet ﷺ gave specific guidance on when within the time window to pray each prayer:

“The best deed is prayer at its proper time.”

For planning prayer times at a destination you are travelling to, the Global Prayer Times directory covers every city worldwide so you can prepare before you arrive.
For the Islamic calendar context — understanding which Islamic months and dates align with your prayer schedule — the Islamic Hijri Calendar integrates prayer times with the full Hijri calendar view.
The scholars unanimously agree: a prayer performed at its appointed time, even if simple and brief, is superior to a lengthened prayer performed late without excuse. Knowing precisely when the time begins is the foundation of every valid Salah.
